Streaming to Instagram LIVE

I was invited by my friend Kathy Cano-Murillo to join in on her marathon craft event #CorazonCraftNight. I have known Kathy for decades, but she is a pioneer in the crafting world, so I was both honored and intimidated. I had no access to a tripod, and I knew there was no way I was going to be able to do a LIVE 15-minute tutorial. So I went to work figuring what I was going to make and how I was going to present it.

The actual project was a no brainer. We are under social distancing orders, so I wanted to create something that most people would have on hand. I also wanted it to be affordable and easy enough for the non-artists.

I knew that to properly present a live tutorial, I would have to demonstrate multiple stages of the project, and that would pose several problems. Number one, I didn’t have numerous boxes that were the same size. This scenario would have presented glitches of inconsistency that my media producer brain could not forgive. Issue two is that I don’t have a crafting studio or even a space designated for crafts. My daughter and I usually just set up on the floor in our dining room. To participate, I knew I would have to find a way to prerecord the tutorial and somehow stream it to Instagram.

Enter OBS and

OBS stands for Open Broadcaster Software. This free and open-source software for video recording and live streaming is available to anyone with a MAC or PC. OBS Studio can broadcast your streams to platforms like Facebook and YouTube by itself, but a plugin from makes it possible to stream to Instagram as well.

If you have any prior streaming experience, you will find the software a BREEZE to use. You create scenes and easily switch in from using your computer camera to prerecorded footage, images, your desktop, or another device. If you don’t have any streaming experience, there is an OBS Blog, as well as many videos on YouTube that can help you.

OBS is free, and the first five streams on are also free. You can buy more streams if you choose. If you are trying to grow your Instagram community, this is a winner.
