Sound Good?
A few years ago, when my daughter was about seven, we were cleaning the house and I decided to Youtube a classical playlist. Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven came on. Our conversation was as follows:
“Mom?”
“Yes baby?”
“Is this Beethoven?”
“Yes baby.”
“We learned about him in school. He was deaf huh?”
“Yes. He was.”
“He could FEEL his music vibrations, huh?”
“Yes. He could.”
“Well…” she said with tears in her eyes. “I FEEL this.”
A song that inspires tears of joy? DIVINE. Oh how Beethoven knew this… He takes us on a journey of emotion in his three movements. If you sing in a choir (or the shower), or chant (or pray aloud) regularly, you will intuitively understand this, because you have experienced it first hand.
Sound is vibration.
Every organ, and every cell, absorbs and emits sound, and has an optimum vibration or “resonate frequency.” Emotions and mental states also have certain resonant frequencies. When exposed to a resonant frequency long enough, the body (and mind) will fall into sync; if you have ever had a song bring to tears or made you want to jump up and want to move, you understand this.
I’ve used therapeutic sound to realign some of my own “out of sync frequencies” with great results. There are dozens of techniques to experiment and play with. I will post more of my experiences using music as a supplement to manage my anxiety, at a later time.
For now, if you’re feeling like you’d like to experiment with the sound, look for what will motivate you in the direction you need to go. If you need to relax, what gets you there? If you need to get up and go, what do you listen for? Be open. Have fun and use your ears to be well.
