My move to Mexico
It has been a life-long dream of mine to travel the globe. I’m creating this series because so many of you asked me to share about my move to Mexico.
In 2021, I left Los Angeles and headed to Mexico. I had been inspired by many of the YouTubers I saw so as soon as my son graduated from High School, I sold, gave away or stored, everything I owned, packed my things, and headed out to the first country on my list.
FIRST STOP… CDMX!
Mexico City, also known as Ciudad de México or CDMX, is the capital and largest city of Mexico. It is located in the Valley of Mexico, surrounded by majestic mountain ranges. The city is renowned for its rich history, ancient ruins, colonial architecture, and modern cosmopolitan atmosphere. Mexico City is an incredible destination that offers a wealth of cultural, historical, and culinary experiences. As a travel vlogger, I am thrilled to share with you some highlights of this vibrant and diverse city.
THE NEIGHBORHOOD
Mexico City is broken down into little neighborhoods called “colonias.” As of September 2021, there were over 1,800 colonias in Mexico City. I settled into the Colonia Narvate when I first got to CDMX and it was such a sweet introduction. Colonia Narvarte is a residential neighborhood located in the southern part of Mexico City. It is known for its tranquil atmosphere, tree-lined streets, and a mix of mid-century architecture and modern developments. The neighborhood has a fantastic community spirit that you’ll instantly feel. Whether it’s art exhibitions, cultural events, or neighborhood fiestas, there’s always something exciting happening. Every morning I woke up to a Zumba class happening in the park across the street. In the evening the same park was filled with families playing together, couples strolling and lots of dogs being loved up on. At any give time I might stumble upon a lively street party or discover a hidden gem of a cafe.
Colonia Narvarte had my back when it came to convenience. I found everything I needed right around the corner. From corner markets to big supermarkets, I didn’t have to venture far to grab essentials. Plus, there are are many buses and trains to all other parts of the city within Narvate.
One of the best parts about my apartment was that it came with housekeeping, which is common in Mexico. Lucero food prepped for me and took me shopping at the local markets and absolutely made my time there extra special.
Alright, let’s talk about Chapultepec Park—it’s seriously awesome! This massive urban park is a must-visit. You’ll find it right in the heart of the city, with tons of cool stuff to check out.
Chapultepec has got it all—history, nature, and fun. There are ancient ruins, a majestic castle, and beautiful gardens. Chapultepec Castle had me in my feelings. The castle offers some killer views but, like so much of Latin American history, the opulence of colonialism can be overwhelming.
Chapultepec Park is a vibrant escape from the city buzz. It’s got green spaces, walking trails, and even a zoo! Plus, there are open-air theaters where you can catch live performances or just chill and soak up the atmosphere. It was a place that as soon as I visited I knew I was going to want to share it with my loved ones too.
SAFETY FIRST.
One of the questions I get asked all the time is if Mexico is safe… While having a blast, and being a tourist, it’s important to keep safety in mind. Colonia Narvarte is generally considered a safe neighborhood, but it’s always smart to stay aware and follow local guidelines. I use the same street smarts I are up with, have fun responsibly and no seas pendeja!
