Money Talk: How Much I Spent My First Month in Mexico
My travel posts aren’t just about discovering Mexico; they’re about the ability each of us has to rediscover ourselves. This post is no different, I’m just talking about money. They say you shouldn’t discuss politics, religion, or money, but I’ve always been one to challenge the norms. I prefer to see myself as a pioneer, fearlessly exploring uncharted territories. And that’s exactly what my Mexican adventure is all about—discovering life on my own terms, redefining where, when, and how I want to live.
Did I really overspend?
Angels, before we embark on this captivating journey of budgeting and spending, let me assure you that my decision to move to Mexico was far from impulsive. For the past five years, I had been yearning to explore Latin America, although Mexico initially wasn’t on my radar. Having visited Mexico numerous times before, I wanted something new and different. However, fate had other plans. As I immersed myself in captivating videos and shows highlighting the unseen wonders of Mexico, I felt a magnetic pull towards this land. Thus, my journey began.
Preparing for this odyssey involved extensive research from a variety of sources.
Social Media
In our interconnected world, social media reigns supreme, and I found great value in harnessing its power. Instagram became my go-to platform for quick glimpses of fantasy, igniting my curiosity and inspiring further exploration. Here are some of my faves @eddga, @mexicoinmypocket and @mexicocity.explore
For more profound insights and detailed information on places and experiences, I turned to YouTube, where I found an abundance of resources to deepen my understanding. Some channels I watched were @LaKarencitaMX, @EatBailaTravel and @TheYarbros
The digital world also provided a supportive community eager to share their knowledge. Facebook groups became invaluable, as I sought specific answers to my questions. The collective wisdom and firsthand experiences shared within these groups enriched my understanding and allowed me to approach my journey with greater confidence. Must follows are Latino World Travelers and Nomadness. I also recommend joining groups that are specific to the town that you are visiting.
cost-of-living & Quality of Life databases
To ensure practicality and make informed decisions, I delved into online databases. These reliable platforms provided estimates for expenses such as housing, utilities, health insurance, food, transportation, and other miscellaneous costs. Armed with this knowledge, I could plan my adventure with financial prudence while embracing the abundant possibilities that awaited me in Mexico. Popular databases are Numbeo, The Earth Awaits and Expatistan.

In preparation for my Mexican adventure, I diligently set a budget of $1000, excluding lodging, taking into account various factors such as my previous experiences, financial capabilities, and personal comfort levels. And yet I stilL… Went over by 687.14?!!!

After a lifetime of ensuring everyone else’s well-being, I’ve finally come to realize that it’s equally important to take care of myself.
While reflecting on my recent overspending, I’ve come to recognize that there were certain expenses on that list which I may not repeat in the future. However, this experience has also led me to make an important decision: I am increasing my budget. This revised budget not only allows me to continue indulging in the activities that bring me pleasure but also incorporates a dedicated savings component specific to my time here in Mexico.
Adjustments are an integral part of maintaining our well-being—both financially and personally. It’s essential to find a balance between our desires and responsibilities.
